What happens now after an attack?

I was physically attacked by my father about 2 hours ago. I called the police and they took a report and pictures and said they will send it to the Prosecutor's office and they will decide if charges will be filed or not. I've never been in a situation with police before and I dont know what they mean. Long story short I was visiting my parents, when my father asked me in a not so nice way to leave so I was gathering my son, my dog and my sons toys when things escalated, he was yelling at me while I was holding my son then he grabbed my wrist then held me by my neck, my mother came and took my son thats when he tried to punch me. I also punched back and I do believe I made contact, its very blurry so Im not100%. I tried to call the police but he told me I couldnt and broke my cell phone, then I went to a neighbors and called. Can I be in trouble? My husband is in Iraq and if I were to get arrested no one could care for my son. what happens now?
