Why do Public High Schools make the students read these types of books?

Your school curriculum is based on the current politically correct agenda of the school board in your state and the courses that they feel will cause the least amount of friction and possible conflict that would involve the ACLU. It seems that each state is different in what they mandate. Ex: in Texas we have the leave no child behind agenda which has produced a record number of individuals who cannot read or write.
