What can I do to take this shot better next time?

Your problem is with the light on the subject (you?) and the background, which is really lit up. In the given light, you would need to take a longer exposure to properly expose the subject. The problem with that is the background will be even more washed out, so the solution is to use your own light. I personally wouldn't use the built-in flash, but if you can get a SLR flash, a commander (used to send a signal from the camera), a receiver (used to get the command and tell the flash to fire), and a studio umbrella or a softbox, you can achieve very professional results. If that's too much work, just use the built-in flash. It will help cut down on background light.
